Agribusiness is among the most important and largest sectors of the economy of Ukraine. The country long ago established itself as a top exporter of agricultural commodities and goods. Cereals, sunflower oil, flour, sugar and other foodstuffs come from Ukraine and appear at store shelves all over the world and they are considered as a quality mark. The sector supports sustainable development of the country and attracts significant investments.

Despite ongoing full-scale Russian invasion, in 2022 Ukrainian agribusiness managed to ensure as much as a half of the total export of Ukraine. But the question is how will the challenges of the day affect the agricultural sector of Ukraine?

Distinctive Features of Sowing Campaign of 2023

Reduction of areas suit for sawing seems to be the acutest problem of 2023. This is first of all explained by the temporary occupation of some territories of Ukraine. Besides, according to official data released by the press-service of the secretariat of the Parliament of Ukraine, about 7 million ha of arable land cannot be sawn because of mines. This is a problem mostly for de-occupied regions like Kherson, Mykolaiv and Kharkiv.

Another serious challenge is related to the logistics of and hindrances in the Grain Corridor also known as the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Before the war 96% of the total grain export was dispatched through Black Sea ports. The capacity of available alternative routes is limited. To make it worse, prices for consumables like fuel, fertilizers and seeding material have remarkably grown and this has also had an impact on capabilities of agribusinesses.

Despite all this, sowing has never ceased although it had to adapt to new conditions brought about by the war. One may notice how geography of sowing campaigns has changed. Some crops are now cultivated on areas where it has never happened before. For example, Kirovograd region has always been focusing on cereals but this year some areas are allocated for crops like corn, sunflower and vegetables. Ivano-Frankivsk region has extended areas under soya beans, potato and vegetables.

In general, almost 95% of available areas has already been sown which makes up approximately 12.5 million ha.

According to experts, in 2023 we should expect lower yields of wheat, barley and corn while crops like sunflower, rape, soya beans and sugar beetroot promise to produce better harvests.

Local Problems of Agribusiness and Ways to Overcome Them

Along with global challenges facing the agribusiness of Ukraine, one should not omit local issues, in particular, the shortage of qualified personnel. It was there even before the war broke and nowadays it has reached its culmination because of mobilization and increased risks associated with the job.

Currently there is a noticeable lack of agronomists and agricultural engineers with sound knowledge of crop cultivation, modern technologies and equipment. It makes complicated the implementation of effective technical solutions. Moreover, technologists and mechanics are hard to find so repair and maintenance of machinery are also a problem. All this is impacting productivity and augmenting the costs.

Tractor drivers and field workers are also among most wanted. Nowadays there are more modern machines than employees capable of operating them. They are the ones upon whom the quality and quantity of processed fields and future harvest heavily depend. Every process has its timeframes and deadlines because it is crucial to respect optimal periods and take advantage of favorable weather conditions.
