The agricultural sector is a major contributor to the national economy, accounting for almost 11% of the country’s GDP, 41% of total exports, and offering employment to more than 14% of the populace of Ukraine. Key areas of focus encompass the cultivation of cereals and oilseeds (wheat, barley, corn, sunflower, etc.), along with the advancement of livestock farming.

However, this sector faces various challenges. Even before the full-scale invasion, issues such as low mechanization levels, outdated production technologies, and logistical difficulties were prevalent. After 2022, the situation significantly worsened as additional problems emerged. These included territorial occupation, destruction of enterprises, equipment, and storage facilities, landmine threats in cultivated areas, mass population migration, mobilization of workers, power outages, rising fuel prices, and difficulties in marketing produced goods.

Despite these challenges, the agricultural business continues to find ways to survive and adapt to the complex conditions. Some farmers are shifting towards cultivating less resource-intensive crops, changing the geography of their sowing campaigns, or developing local consumption markets to reduce dependence on exports.

Even in these challenging times, the majority of producers do not cease sowing, harvesting, and managing their farm. They invest all their efforts in ensuring food security not only for Ukraine but also for the world.

For example, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, as of the second half of November, farmers had sown almost 5.8 million hectares of winter crops, which is 92.3% of the planned area.

Contrary to the forecasts of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, which predicted a 13% decline in grain production in 2023, in addition to the 37% drop observed the previous year, expectations were not met.

Despite sowing 2.2 million hectares less than in 2022, favorable weather conditions led to increased yields. Barley, wheat, and corn reached record levels of 51.8 c/ha.

This achievement, among other factors, is also attributed to highly skilled agricultural workers. Despite significant labor shortages observed before the full-scale invasion, which peaked recently, their dedication and professionalism have helped salvage the situation.

SUN ONE actively contributes to enterprises’ efforts to overcome the labor crisis.
